About Us

New Urban Forestry is the only TCIA Accredited company in our area, and with Certified Arborist, Board-Certified Master Arborist and Tree Risk Assessment Qualification credentials, we are clearly passionate about our craft.

We like to think of ourselves as old souls with new technology. We believe that by improving tree care we can improve the urban forest, that by improving the urban forest we can improve our community, and that by improving our community we improve the world. Trees are our community’s largest living asset. They reduce stormwater runoff, sequester atmospheric carbon, reduce energy costs, and improve mental health. Rather than reacting to tree problems as they occur, the most effective way to manage tree care is with a thoughtful, proactive plan.

We believe in the power of
talented people with
one bold goal:
to care for the Urban Forest.

Meet Team NUF:

Kevin, Owner, Dreamer

Kevin received his BA from The University of Georgia in 2000 and from there went on to work for the US Forest Service where he served as a wildland firefighter. In 2004, he started work as a climbing arborist and eventually became a field supervisor and crew foreman for various companies. He helped start New Urban Forestry in 2008. When he's not working, Kevin likes to spend time with his wife, Hilari, and two children, Adah and Henry. He also likes to garden, read, mess with the yard and house, and run. He would also like to be camping, hiking, climbing, and fishing when he can get around to it.

Shawn, Owner, Navigator

Shawn is an ISA Certified Arborist, #SO-5368A. He originally hails from Iowa and began his arboriculture career in Omaha, Nebraska before moving to Athens to join the UGA tree care crew. In 2007, he founded his own company and a few short years later merged with New Urban Forestry. Shawn is easily the most recognizable arborist in our service areas, and specializes in residential tree care, pruning and removals. He lives in Athens with his wife and two children and enjoys mountain biking, vintage airplanes, and top fuel drag racing. He's also an amateur birdwatcher.

Art, General Manager, Cowboy

Art is a Board-Certified Master Arborist #SO-2627B and Tree Risk Assessment Qualified. An Athens native and Georgia Bulldawg, Art has more than 15 years of experience the industry and specializes in technical services, plant health care and tree risk assessment. He’s served on the board of directors and as an officer for several industry associations. Art joined the NUF team in 2017 and is glad to be back in Athens.

Jessie, Office Manager, Voice of Reason

Jessie earned her ABJ from the Grady College at the University of Georgia and also holds BA in Anthropology from UGA. She has worked as the office manager for New Urban Forestry since 2011. Most Athenians are familiar with her voice, as she's also the host of Morning Edition and Under the Influence on WUGA-FM. In her spare time, if she’s not reading, she likes to run in the woods, go on adventures with her husband and son, and hang upside down at Canopy.

Hall, Landscape Designer, Eternal Optimist

Hall’s modest goal is to save the planet, one garden at a time. He approaches each property with an emphasis on improving not only the utility and appearance of the landscape, but the ecology, soils and biology of the site. Hall has a Master’s degree from Mississippi State in Landscape Architecture (so, technically, he’s a Bulldawg) and a passion for plants and the people who love them.

John-Ashley, Operations Coordinator, Wild Child

John-Ashley is an ISA Certified Arborist, holds a masters in forestry from UGA, is TRAQ qualified and can often be found operating our grapple crane. He is a crew leader and handles the mighty task of scheduling and shuffling trucks/people. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife Meredith and their two children and likes to drink cheap beer.

Stephen Liverman, Landscape Design, Gentleman

Stephen is a carpenter by trade, but after years of working at botanical gardens in Alabama, he has a deep appreciation for native plants and design. When he’s not coordinating all things landscape, he teaches at the Potter’s House and builds decks for Habitat for Humanity. He also enjoys spending time with his dog, Remy (the shirt-wearing dog).

Aaron, arborist, SChemer

Aaron is an ISA Certified Arborist, #SO-7476A. Aaron grew up in North Carolina and learned his love of trees in the blue ridge mountains outside Asheville. With a background in landscaping and tree care, Aaron is our resident specialist for commercial properties. Aaron has a wife and four children and still finds time to enjoy hiking and mountain biking on the weekends.

Ryan, Safety/Training Coordinator, Mr. Fix-it

Ryan Wheatley is one of New Urban Forestry's longstanding employees. He has been with NUF since 2011, most of that time as a crew leader. He now oversees crew safety and training and keeps the equipment organized and running. Ryan is a resident of Oconee County where he lives with his wife and two dogs. He enjoys spending time outdoors in his free time with activities like fishing and golfing.

The New Urban Forestry crew that came out to remove a few trees and trim up some others arrived early, were incredibly efficient, courteous, and professional.
— Joseph, Athens
It’s hard not to go on and on about New Urban Forestry. They were the most impressive of any service we’ve used in Athens, and that includes plumbers, electricians, contractors, etc. I cannot stress enough that if you’re using any other tree service because of cost or another reason, you are using an inferior company. Use New Urban if at all possible.
